Transnational Spaces in Contemporary Cinema

Welcome to the website of the research project ‘From Social Space to Cinematic Space: Mise-en-Scènes of the Transnational in Contemporary Cinema’

This project is part of an ongoing research on transnational cinemas and paradigm changes in the cinema of the 21st century.

Building on our previous understanding and utilisation of the theories of the cosmopolitan, the transnational, the border and mobilities, we now turn to the study of “the cinematic transnational”, that is, the spatial mechanisms and strategies through which films signify the contemporary culture of borders, mobilities and cosmopolitan aspirations.

The project seeks to look in depth at the ways in which film form, here signalled by mise-en-scène in its widest scope, constructs transnational and/or cosmopolitan scenarios. In other words, it contributes to the theoretical body of cinematic space by researching the ways in which the cinematic spatial imagination constructs the contemporary spaces of the transnational.
